Gail, originally named Gale, is the protagonist of both the original Phoenotopia and its remake Phoenotopia: Awakening. She is the player-controlled character who travels around the world in search for her abducted family.

Family

In Phoenotopia, Gale's brother Kiter can be seen working at the kitchen at the beginning of the game. Nana, her foster grandmother, greets Gale and tasks her with bringing back the Orphanage Children from Duri Forest for dinner. Abigail is also mentioned by another Panselo Villager as Gale's mother.

In Phoenotopia: Awakening, since many characters have undergone name-changes, Gail's twin brother is named Kitt instead, while her mother is named Ava. A flashback cutscene at the end of E.D.E.N reveals that only Ava is given birth by Nana, and all these characters are in fact biological unrelated otherwise.

Appearance

Gail is a pink-haired girl with peach skin. She wears a white long-sleeved shirt beneath a beige waistcoat, along with long gray trousers and dark brown boots that reach her knees. Her eye colour is dark blue in the game, but light brown in the promotional and concept art.

In the early designs, Gale was wearing light gray clothes, brown bracelets, and light brown boots. The hairstyle feels more "rigid" and is of a slightly darker colour. Many players had the impression that Gale was male at the time.

Another unused design depicted Gale with black hair instead of pink, wearing also an additional red hairband. She wore a purple vest, long gray trousers, and dark brown boots reaching to her knees. A similar design with different colour is used in the finalised version of Phoenotopia, which the design in Phoenotopia: Awakening is slightly slimmer with darker colour in hair and vest by comparison.

Bio

Gail is a young girl living in the orphanage of Panselo Village with her twin brother Kitt. They are referred as the "Wonder Twins" in the village for how well they perform in the Dojo and favoured by master Cadell there. In particular, Gail can perform powerful attacks with Ki, and is always quick to learn the Techniques taught by other dojo masters. In contrast, she also happens to be the worst swimmer in the village according to Ernest, completely unable to float without using a Lifesaver.

Gail is a helpful person who does not mind running errands for strangers regardless of reward, which is notable when completing Garnet's and Ruby's quests. That said, Gail is mostly silent and once described as taciturn by the potioner in Atai City.

Beside being a capable fighter and helpful person, Gail also seems to be skillful at fishing and cooking, being able to reel up a shark before turning it into scrumptious Fish Steak. Her adaptability is further indicated by how quickly she learns Songs as well, possibly thanks to her past experience with the guitar found in her room.

In the original Phoenotopia, Gale seems to like drinking Bottled Puki Milk according to its item description, and eating Duri Herb according to Mika's dialogues.

Trivia

• One of the early ideas for Gale includes her being a super human to make sense of her great feats of strength that outclass trained soldiers, which is partly inspired by the young protagonist in The Legend of Zelda series.

• In an early build of Phoenotopia, there was a mention of a pretty-looking sister of Gale named Kaya by another villager. This was eventually removed in the final release.
